This is the story of Helen, a bitter hideous girl and her blind, but beautiful sister Rachel. But it's also about the founding of Roam and all the other people that live in Roam. Each of their stories are interconnected with Helen and Rachel's. From the very beginning I was invested in every character. The writing is absolutely wonderful and the way he describes people and events is so new, so creative. The writing was so wonderful I began to hate Helen but even as I hated her, I also sympathized with her.
Roam is very much like any other small, dying town but it's also filled with magical realism. I love magical realism and the author is very talented at writing it.
I do wish the author had written more about Rachel. I felt like I never really knew her, especially because I "knew" Helen so well. I also wasn't a huge fan of the ending. But! Despite those flaws, I really enjoyed the novel.

It seems that this is a metaphysical tale about manipulation and the consequences. I found it hard to get into at first, but by the end I realized the authors purpose. It is not a gripping tale and does not flow easily. Therefore, three stars from me.
I loved the imaginative realms into which the author takes us as we watch each sister grow. One sister discovers love and the other loses and discards it. Both transformations are provocatively set before us, and both are ultimately fulfilling the arc  of the narrative.
I really enjoyed the unique setting and characters in this book. The ending, however, did not seem to fit the story and I was disappointed with that. Good writing style and easy to read. Let's your imagination draw from the author's descriptions.
I had high expectations for "The Kings and Queens of Roam," but found the story to be disappointing and depressing. Everyone was either miserable or horrid, and nothing "happens" until the end. And when something does happen, it does so with such little gusto. I had to plod along to finally finish the book. If you like poking your own eyes out, you might enjoy this book.
The characters in the book are fanciful as are the ordeals they must face but the book is written in such a graceful and tender way, you are drawn into the story to feel the joy and pain of the characters. The origin of the many unusual circumstances in the book are not explained but somehow that adds to the flow of the story and makes this book a very fun read.
If you liked Big Fish or Snow Child, this is a book for you.
To be fair, the only experience I have with this author is Big Fish in movie form, so I'm not familiar with his writing style. So take my critique with a grain of salt the story is not my cup of tea. It's about miserable people, living miserable lives and doing miserable things to each other. It's a quiet story with no gripping drama. I don't mind an uneventful story if the characters are interesting and there is meaningful development occuring with them, but I felt that was lacking in this novel. While the characters change over the course of the book, they change in ways that are fairly predictable and boring.

However, I can see how this would be a genre that people enjoy, so the only caution I would give, is if you're looking for something happy or feel good, don't read this book.
I was really expecting to like this book as I loved Big Fish. It falls completely flat, however. The story itself is pretty creative, but it is honestly a little hard to follow and is ultimately a revenge story - and not a very good one. I found most of the characters in the book to be rather despicable people, which meant that I didn't much care what happened to them. I think there is a lot of unrealized potential in this book, but at it is, it's just not that great.
