Servants of the Storm eBook Delilah S Dawson
It's been a few years since I have been to Savannah, but the setting came alive for me when reading, Servants of the Storm. While I prefer that old cities have ghosties, Savannah is full of nasty demons in this tale.Dovey hasn't been the same since Hurricane Josephine. Recovering from a breakdown, she decides she doesn't want to feel numb anymore and skips her meds. This act begins an adventure for Dovey to find her best friend, Carly, but Carly was killed in the storm though Dovey has seen her wandering around in Savannah and believes she is leaving messages or signs for her and she believes Carly is in grave danger. Dovey ends up seeing some strange things and going places in Savannah that mere mortals are oblivious to-like little secret portals to an unseen world where evil lurks unbeknownst to normal humans. Potions and magical things abound in Savannah.
I was torn between 3 and 4 stars for this book. At times descriptions or ideas are overstated while others are a little vague, but I think that YA readers or older teens may enjoy this story. It started off great and lagged a bit in the middle for me, but picked up steam to the end where it reminded me of Goosebumps, which I always enjoy watching with my kids.

Servants of the Storm eBook Delilah S Dawson Reviews
I'm really enjoying this book (I haven't finished I'm not quite half way through); it turns out I really love creepy YA novels like this one, Miss Peregrine's, and Asylum. The only thing is I have to be careful about reading it right before going to sleep--weird dreams ahoy!
EDIT Ok, I finished it (awhile ago but it only just now occurred to me to go back and edit this) and WOW. Ok ok can I have the sequel now? Because (a) THAT ENDING and (b) I NEED more Isaac in my life! This was an awesome, spooky read with really well-drawn characters and a plot that twists and turns like a really good roller coaster.
Of "YA Southern Gothic Horror Novel," "novel" is the only word that applies to the kind of stuff I normally seek out. After plenty of recs online, and really enjoying the author's posts on Twitter and various blogs, I took the plunge. Very glad I did.
The opening hooked me, hard, the feel and texture of alt-Savannah was palpable throughout. I really believed in (and rooted for) Dovey, the main character. I met the love of my life on a high school stage; the theatre scenes really resonated. Some tremendously imaginative set-pieces in here, original and very well executed. As I said, horror isn't usually my thing, but I loved how the dread, suspense and action/gore was handled really well.
Plot = yes. Read in one sitting.
Negatives? Hmm. Do agree with a couple of mentions that Dovey working things out in her head, in first-person, sometimes read like the author doing the same. The ending wasn't the ending I *wanted*—but unlike some reviewers, I didn't see it as a cliffhanger or sequel-bait. Would happily buy and read a sequel if written, but totally satisfied with this one as a stand-alone.
I keep automatically going back to my kindle hoping to read more of this thrilling story that Ms. Dawson built, only to be disappointed because I already finished it. I truly NEED to find out what happens to these characters. Plenty here have summarized the plot, so I'll skip that and just say that the author fleshes out her characters so much that you love them and need to know that they're going to be ok. The vivid environments she paints with her words are so spot-on and easy to imagine. The suspense takes you from one moment to the next. I cannot wait for the next book in this series!
The cover absolutely made me buy this book. I love dark and creepy and I obviously had to have it! It definitely has the dark and creepy going on in the book. I liked the characters and the loved the story line.
I had trouble about half way through because Dovey was too accepting of what she was about. I myself would have had a lot of trouble accepting that. In all it was a pretty good book!
This was a deliciously creepy and frightening story in which pretty much everything is not what it seems.
The story opens with best friends Carly and Dovey battling Hurricane Josephine, bearing down on Savannah. Carly is killed during the storm and Dovey spends the next year in a medical haze. it's a story that reads like an episode of American Horror Story-meets-Supernatural.
When Dovey thinks she sees her dead friend in a coffee shop, she swears off meds and discovers all kinds of creepy things infecting Savannah post-storm. The characters are all a little strange, a little 'off', which only adds to the scare factor of this story.I'd have enjoyed more romantic moments in the story and Dovey's a bit hard to connect with, but I admired her unwavering loyalty to find out what really happened to Carly. Boys Isaac and Baker added heat and drama. The setting was intriguing -- I've never been to Savannah and enjoyed the way the author described the area's history. The toughest part is trying to categorize this story -- it's YA urban thriller/Southern Gothic/paranormal romance.
A unique and scary story.
WHOA NELLY. From reading the blurb, I expected something pretty creepy and, let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed. Ms. Dawson draws you into a world that seems to exist a side-step away from ours and the mythology she's created to support it is very well thought-out and fresh. There were whole sections of this book where I found myself holding my breath, so lost in the story that I was helpless to do anything but turn the page and keep reading. If you're looking for something dark, eerie, and strangely beautiful, this is the book for you!
I cannot wait to see what Ms. Dawson comes up with next, because she's thrown down a serious gauntlet with SERVANTS OF THE STORM. Just an amazing book all around,
